/Problem Statement
/Problem Statement
Immigrant professionals and high-net-worth individuals in the UK face significant barriers when attempting to invest in the local economy. Despite having capital and interest in wealth-building through business investments, they struggle with unfamiliarity with UK investment regulations, lack of access to vetted investment opportunities, complex legal documentation requirements, uncertainty about risk assessment and due diligence, and difficulty tracking investment performance across multiple ventures. This creates a missed opportunity for both immigrant investors seeking to integrate economically and UK SMEs needing alternative funding sources.

/Research & Discovery
/Research & Discovery
We conducted research with 10 immigrant professionals and high-net-worth individuals in the UK to understand their investment behaviors, challenges, and needs when exploring local business opportunities. Using online surveys, virtual interviews with immigrants from Nigeria, India, Poland, and Pakistan, and consultations with financial advisors, we validated key assumptions about barriers to investment participation.
Our findings showed that 82% were eager to invest in UK businesses but felt discouraged by complex processes. The biggest challenges were limited knowledge of regulations and taxes (71%), difficulty finding trustworthy opportunities (64%), legal and contract concerns (57%), and uncertainty about business viability (53%). Many relied on community recommendations, which often restricted access to diverse and credible opportunities.
To feel more confident, 78% wanted verified company profiles with transparent financial data, 68% sought simpler legal documentation, 61% requested clear educational resources on UK investment laws, and 55% preferred one platform to monitor all investments. Notably, 43% had £10,000–£50,000 ready to invest but lacked trusted guidance or tools.
Competitor analysis revealed gaps across the market. Seedrs offers strong investor protection but caters mostly to startups and experienced investors. Crowdcube provides variety but limited due diligence and complex fees. AngelList targets accredited investors and assumes advanced knowledge, while traditional financial institutions focus on wealthy clients with high fees and little access to local SME opportunities.
From our research, five insights emerged: trust is critical, education must be context-specific, simplicity encourages action, community fosters confidence, and real-time monitoring sustains engagement.
Our primary persona, Chioma, is a 38-year-old Nigerian software engineer in London earning £75,000 with £30,000 in savings to invest. She aims to build wealth through UK business investments but struggles to verify legitimate opportunities, understand legal terms, and find community support. As she put it, “I have money to invest and want to support growing businesses here, but I don’t know where to start or who to trust.

/Design Process
/Design Process
Based on our research, we designed a mobile-first fintech platform focused on trust, education, and simplicity for immigrant investors in the UK. The mobile approach ensures easy access for users who prefer managing their finances on their phones and may not always use desktop computers.
The investor journey is built around three main steps: discover, learn, and monitor. In the discovery stage, AI helps match users to investment opportunities based on their risk level, investment amount, industry experience from their home country, language preferences, and personal values. Each opportunity comes with clear, easy-to-read due diligence reports, verified company profiles with financial data, visual indicators of key metrics, and simple explanations of UK-specific terms and rules.
Learning occurs naturally throughout the platform, rather than in a separate section. As users explore investments, they see brief educational notes that explain concepts such as equity, shareholder rights, and taxes relevant to their visa type. We used a step-by-step approach so users can view basic info first, then tap to read more only if they want to. There’s also a financial literacy section with practical guides for immigrants—covering topics such as how capital gains tax works, what investment limits apply to certain visa types, and how to report investments to HMRC.
The monitoring experience lets users track their investments in real time through a simple dashboard that shows portfolio performance, updates from companies, and easy-to-understand charts. Users can compare their results with market averages and even connect with other immigrant investors to share experiences, all while keeping personal investment details private.
During onboarding, the platform adjusts to each user’s experience level—offering extra support for beginners and faster setup for advanced investors. Every design choice was made to solve the trust, education, and simplicity challenges identified in our research while keeping the platform compliant and secure.

Designing Migratevest in three weeks taught me the value of focus and prioritization. Working solo meant choosing features that solved real immigrant investor pain points instead of building everything at once. The research showed that fintech must balance sophistication with simplicity—immigrant investors wanted powerful tools explained in plain language. I learned that great financial design builds trust by removing confusion, not adding complexity.
Designing secure yet beginner-friendly investment flows was the biggest challenge. Progressive disclosure and contextual education proved more effective than overwhelming users with too much detail upfront. If I revisited the project, I’d strengthen community features, improve AI matching with cultural context, and expand immigrant-focused education on taxes and visa rules.
This project taught me that inclusive fintech design means prioritizing clarity, trust, and empathy—creating better experiences for all users, not just immigrants.
