Most foreigners experience significant difficulty in speaking and learning English quickly when they arrive in an English-speaking country. This creates a critical gap between those who want to learn and those who would like to teach, with no clear point of guidance or structured pathway for language acquisition and cultural assimilation.

/Research & Discovery
/Research & Discovery
We conducted interviews with over 25 recent immigrants and surveyed more than 100 newcomers to understand their language learning challenges. Our research revealed that immigrants struggle with three critical gaps: generic language apps fail to address their specific professional needs, existing platforms don't provide integration support beyond basic vocabulary, and users lack access to human guidance when they need it most.
The competitive landscape revealed that while Duolingo excels at gamification and accessibility, it provides one-size-fits-all content lacking real-world context or community support. Other platforms like Rosetta Stone and Babbel focus purely on language without addressing credential conversion or cultural integration. This left a clear opportunity for a platform that combines personalized language learning with practical immigration support.
Our research uncovered five key insights. First, immigrants need context-specific learning tied to immediate needs like job interviews or medical appointments. Second, community connection with fellow immigrants and locals is essential for successful integration. Third, professional skills don't translate without guidance on credential conversion and local workplace culture. Fourth, users need safe spaces to build confidence before engaging in high-stakes conversations. Finally, immigrants want one platform for their entire journey rather than juggling multiple fragmented resources.
We created Amara Chen as our primary persona: a 34-year-old software engineer from Nigeria who needs industry-specific English, credential recognition guidance, and professional networking support. As she expressed, "I need more than just English lessons. I need to know how to navigate my career in this new country, connect with people in my industry, and feel confident that I belong here."

Based on our research insights, we designed a dual-sided platform with separate dashboards for tutors and students. This approach allowed us to serve both user groups effectively while creating a sustainable marketplace that connects immigrants with qualified tutors who understand their specific needs.
The tutor dashboard includes seven core features: Overview for daily activity snapshots, Classroom for conducting sessions, Messages for student communication, Schedule for managing availability, Performance for tracking teaching effectiveness, Wallet for earnings management, and Settings for account control. Each feature supports the complete teaching workflow while remaining accessible for tutors with varying technical skills.
The student dashboard focuses on five essential features: Overview as their learning command center, My Learning for personalized course content organized by professional tracks, Messages for tutor communication, Schedule for booking sessions, and Performance for progress tracking. We intentionally excluded a wallet feature to keep the financial experience simple and friction-free.
Key decisions included creating parallel structures for shared features like Messages and Schedule to ensure aligned expectations between tutors and students, prioritizing Overview as the entry point to reduce cognitive overload, and organizing My Learning by context-specific paths rather than generic lessons to address our users' immediate professional needs

Working on Lecktore fundamentally shifted my approach to design by teaching me that thorough user research reveals needs beyond surface problems, as our interviews with 25+ immigrants showed they needed human connection and professional guidance, not just vocabulary drills like Duolingo offered. Our dual-sided platform successfully consolidated fragmented resources into unified tutor and student dashboards, reducing cognitive overload while the parallel structure for shared features like messaging and scheduling decreased onboarding time and made cross-platform interactions intuitive.
The emphasis on live classes, community engagement, and direct tutor access filled the critical gap that 68% of users reported feeling stuck without human guidance, creating the support network essential for confidence-building and successful integration.
However, revisiting this project, I would deepen the credential conversion features to help immigrants translate professional experience for local markets, add intelligent recommendations to performance tracking beyond basic statistics, and include more asynchronous options for users with unpredictable work schedules.
This experience pushed me beyond interface design to think systemically about entire ecosystems where design decisions ripple through both user groups, taught me to articulate clear rationale to cross-functional teams, and most importantly reminded me that every feature we built could help real people find employment, communicate effectively, or feel less isolated in new countries, fundamentally changing how I approach product design with deep empathy and systems thinking.
